before the debate, denver -- this race was out of reach in ohio for governor romney. now it's a very close race. it's anywhere from president obama with a very, very slight lead to just about an even race in ohio. so it's going to come down to the wire. >> and karen, when you break down the ohio numbers further, it's interesting when you look at those who will vote early, the obama folks went about six out of ten early voters, but losing those who say they're going to vote on election day, 44 to 51, romney with 51. what's the story there? is it potentially that the obama campaign is peaking too early with the early vote snerl larly? >> i don't think so. i think that's great spin from the romney campaign. here's the thing to remember, actually. early voters tend to be what we call sporadic voters. it's a different universe than those who actually vote on election day. they're people who don't necessarily vote in any election, presidential, midterm, you know it. so by targeting the sporadic voters to get them out to vote early, you're actually expanding the universe of

well, president obama heads to iowa later today. his final stop on a three-state trip aimed at talking about student loans and courting young voters. but the secret service scandal continues to be a major topic of discussion wherever he goes. >> the president of the united states of america, barack obama. >> reporter: president obama showing his lighter side on "late night with jimmy fallon." but things got serious quickly when fallon asked about the secret service scandal. >> 99.9% of them every day, they're pitting their life on the line, they do a great job. so a couple of knuckleheads shouldn't detract from, you know, what they do. but, what these guys were thinking, i don't know. that's why they're not there anymore. >> reporter: the comments came just as the secret service announced the result of this disciplinary action for the 12 employees thought to be involved. seven personnel resigned. one is in the process of being terminated. one retired. and three were cleared but given disciplinary action. >> very definitely i'm very

the response was thanks, but no thanks, see you in denver, which is the site of the first presidential debate. paul ryan, incidentally, just last night, lester, released his two tax returns. so we hope, perhaps, that issue has come and gone for him, at least. big speech coming up with his mom in tow. >> ron mountain, thank you. mark halperin is an analyst for nbc as well as "time" magazine. good morning. >> good morning. >> a lot made about him going before retirees to talk about medicare, but as i understand it the changes he's talking about wouldn't affect that group, but us, right? >> it would affect the younger people and that's one of the main points he'll say today. he'll say i'm here to talk about medicare. with the changes i propose and governor romney proposes, it won't affect any of you. that's a tough message to get through, because the people who care about medicare, there can be a lot of confusion and concern and fear, are the people who have it now. he's going with his mother, and this is not a special retirement community, it's a pretty pro-republican community, so this

for his part on "60 minutes" president obama defended his record, while acknowledging he's failed to deliver one of his biggest promises. >> if you ask me what's my biggest disappointment is that we haven't changed the tone in washington as much as i liked. >> reporter: meanwhile, as romney faced criticism he spent more time fund-raising than speaking to voters he'll pick up the pace this week on a bus ture from colorado to the crucial state of ohio and romney is packing in several interviews with local television affiliates in key battleground states including virginia, wisconsin and florida, but when the romney campaign, natalie, begins its bus tour in ohio, today they will be met by a new attack ad. this is from the obama campaign. that new ad is the first one to use romney's comments that were caught on hidden camera where he refers to some americans as victims and government dependant. the ad will accuse him of criticizing americans who don't pay their income taxes when he hasn't, quote, come clean about his own. natalie. >> all right. peter alexander in denver, colorado. thanks
